Why is the internet on my Belkin router so bad?

I have a Belkin Wireless G Router (2.4Ghz-802.11g) With a WEP (or whatever) security key and the internet connection is absolutely awful. Although it works, videos, for example, will only load a fraction of their full length, and will stop without fully loading, and downloads will stop at a random percentage, depending on the size. I use a Norton Anti Virus and use Windows Vista Home Premium.

  1. You are suffering from a saturation of wireless signals in your neighborhood.

To deal with this, the 802.11 spec includes 11 channels that you can tune your router to so it has a clear channel and doesn't get stepped on by others in the area.

Most manufacturers usse channel 6 as the default, so chances are that everyone around you is there.

Go into your setup on the router and look the the dropdown menu for the channel. Change it to 1 or 11.

It has nothing to do with the OS or antivirus.

  2. It may have nothing to do with your router. Unless you've tried another router and found the situation to improve, I would be looking more closely at your Internet connection and/or high-speed modem. The first step I would take is to call your Internet Service Provider and tell them the issues you're having. They may be able to test and/or correct the issue.

  3. I know this is gonna sound like i am being a smart ass but i am not your 2 biggest problems are #1 Vista #2 Norton

Norton is the biggest resource hog on the planet , you would be well advised to get rid of it , plenty of free antivirus programs that are 100 times better

and vista , well it sucks so bad Microsoft is already coming out with Windows 7 to replace it

  4. It may be worth swapping your adapter and trying a different one. Also, have you tried different browsers? Does it behave the same in different browsers? The resource below may help with your router…
