Can a Crossover cable be used to connect to a router or switch?

February 11th, 2010 · 3 Comments

If I already have a bunch of Crossover cables, can I sued them to connect several computers to a router and then the router to a cable modem or will I need to use Networking cables?

It depends. If the router or switch has "auto polarity" or "Auto cross-over" you can use either cable.

The easiest way to tell is to plug a PC into the router/switch with one, if you get link lights at both ends, it will work.

A crossover cable is used to connect two computers directly, instead of using a switch.

    You need network cables.

Crossover cables are used only to connect like devices eg. computer to computer, switch to switch etc. the only exception is router to computer. So you will need a straight through cable
