Can I connect with both a wireless signal and direct ethernet cable through a wireless router?
I currently connect using a cable modem with wireless router. The majority of my household uses laptops and thus require the wireless option, but I use a desktop and would like to connect directly through an ethernet cable. Is this possible? Or am I stuck with the wireless connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Awesome, thanks!
You can have both wireless and wired connections simultaneously. I’ve never been able to predict which connection will be used. first.
Turn the wireless off on your desktop and then plug the cable in. No problem.
yes just plug the cable in to one of the ports on the router
Most routers have several open ports in the rear panel for cable connections and 1 port for an uplink. They will be labeled. These will work without interfering with the wifi signal(well another pc may slow it a bit, as would another pc on the wifi). Connect your desktop to the router with a ethernet cable, don’t use the uplink port unless that is all there is. Turn wifi off on desktop. Restart desktop.
Yes you can but there is no advantage if you are going to the same router.
Yes plug in your desktop and configure the rest wireless. Additionally, if you ever plug in any laptop it will automatically switch to use the wired connection which is faster.
There are actually routers out that there support dual wireless networks as well as a wired one. Mine supports 5GHz 2.5 ghrz and 10/100 wired connection. I keep the tv’s and media systems on the 5 GHz, the laptops on 2.5 and the desktops on wired.
