Most modems will protect very well as long as they are configured correctly…

Only if that cable router has encryption enabled. Otherwise, hackers can still get in like its an open door.

No. The only advantage a cable router has (compared to a wireless router) is that hackers can't hack into the wireless connection, because there is none.

But most hackers break into your computer over the Internet, so it doesn't matter what kind of router you have.

Make sure your computer has good software for firewall, anti-virus, and anti-malware and it will be well protected, whether your router is cable or not.

Routers act as line of defense against hackers. The internet side of a router has it's own IP address. Hackers try and run commands against that IP address. Because a router hasn't got an oeprating system like Windows, Linux or a Mac the commands are ignored.

However, it's just a line of defense. Once a hacker realizes they are up against a router good ones will either try and hack the router or start looking for ways through it to get the IP addresses of the computers it's protecting.
