how can i add a wireless router to my cable enabled internet?

my wireless router is not a linksys one. could that be the problem, ive tried splitting the cable into both routers and using the wireless by itself but that doesnt work.

    Are you able to connect to the internet using a cable connect to the wireless router which is in turn connected to the cable box?
    I am trying to establish if the router is connecting properly to the cable box.
    Once you have set up this connection, could you go to control panel and double click on network connection and then right click on LAN connection and select status. Does it show any IP Address? Please provide this.
    This is quite an open question and there are many possible reasons for the problem. Could you mail me with the answers for the above as I may not be able to locate this thread later.
