This is entirely possible with a cable router, given you purchase wireless cards for each system.. I've seen it done.. I've linked a guide in the source (however, I'm not sure if this is the same configuration that I saw functional.. but this should still work..)
EDIT : That is assuming you have Windows XP.. if you are using older versions of Windows you'd be best just to buy a wireless router and adaptor/card.. you can still cable your mom's in and only need one wireless for your laptop..

You would need to replace the standard wired router with a wireless one, and get a wireless card/adapter for the computer if it does not already have one.

Just get a Wireless Router and it should do the trick as long as your Laptop has Wi-Fi capabilities.

There are 2 solutions possible.
#1 Replace existing Router with a Wireless one, if your Laptop does not have built-in Wireless ability, then you will need to also purchase a wirelesll network adapter card–PCMCIA type. You will want to seek a professional to set-up and SECURE your network. I recommend using WPA encryption, so ensure the PCMCIA card can work with that.
Solution #2 Use Internet connection sharing on the main computer. This requires the purchase of 2 wireless adaptors. One PCI for the Desktop, and one PCMCIA for the laptop; again, seek profesisonal assistance to secure it.
