i have cable internet is their a cable router or a regular router works for all? dont be to proffesional use language that a normal guy can understand. thank you in advance
Cable does not require a special router. There are lots of different kinds out there though. The highest approved standard is 802.11g. Many manufacturers offer extensions for 802.11g, or their flavor of what the next standard, 802.11n will look like. I’m a computer repairman, and I would recommend you stick with a vanilla 802.11g.
I have a linksys wrt54g. Even if for some reason you don’t like their products, they have excellent tutorials if you want to learn more.

You might think about wireless vs. wired. Wireless is convenient, but has various idiosyncrasies. Wired is faster and more secure, but you have to string wires.
I ran the whole house wireless, until I discovered that my neighbor’s wireless signal was stronger than mine in our master bedroom, which is farthest from the router. After some thought, I ran Cat 6 to a hub in the basement, and from there to each the bedrooms. Mrs. Guy no longer complains about my neighbor’s router, and the college students are happy.
Most networks won’t work if the cable length is over 100m long.
If you are using wireless then you need to read the specification of the router to find what kind of range you can get.
Bear in mind that the more walls between you and a wireless router, the weaker the signal will be.
people will recommend hi priced routers. for a home network, you don’t need them. Here are a few companies i have delt with and had no problems. airlink. trendnet, hawkings. they will do the same work as the higher priced ones with the same security. they all come with a firewall to keep hackers out. good luck.
