hooked up cisco wired router to laptop?

February 7th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Hi folks!

I want to set up my network (for ccna lab purposes) with cisco router 2500 series hooked up to my laptop. I'm not sure which type of cable I should use , because my console cable cannot fit with my laptop port.

I run on my laptop windows XP home edition . I've downloaded a hyperterminal on it.

but I cannot see under the parameter < connect using> , com1.

Could anybody around give me some ideas.

Thanks.

To connect with a console cable, it needs to be a rollover cable (http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/fhubs/bmmicg/bmmconn.htm). I am not sure if that is what you mean or if you are having issues with a 9 pin serial port vs 25 pin cable adapter (or vice versa). If you don’t have a serial port on your laptop, you can get a USB-to-serial adapter for pretty cheap.

You probably can’t see the com port because newer laptops don’t have built in serial ports.

You will need to go to the store and buy either a PCMCIA card or a USB cable that provides a 16550 UART (i.e. a COM port) and serial interface to be able to hook up to the router.

I have a PCMCIA card version for this: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=081248

If I were going to buy another, I’d go with the USB to serial cable,(they are cheaper), but if you go that route, make sure it can provide COM port emulation or Hyper terminal won’t be able to see it.
