How can I log into my Cisco 1700 router?

I connected my router to my computer via a console cable. Thing is I’m running Windows 7 and am unsure how to get started. Any ideas?

  1. You just need a software program to plug into it. Not sure, but I think Windows 7 should still have Hyperterminal (sucks), or you could use Putty, which is a much better program. Another good one is Terra Term.

If you use Putty, which I recommend as I use it all day every day, you just need to pick the "Serial" radio button and connect, the settings default to Cisco settings so you don’t have to tweak anything.
