Cisco makes what is probably the broadest range of routers in the world. Routers marked under the Cisco name are business and / or carrier class devices that are extremely rugged, powerful, sophisticated, and reliable. The products marked under the Cisco name are not usually seen in home applications because they are more costly than the home owner would be willing to pay.
Linksys, which Cisco bought several years ago is their version of the home grade devices. Many incorrectly believe that since it is made by Cisco, these units are equal in performance and capability as those marketed under the Cisco name – which just is not the case. Linksys devices are marked to the low end home grade market, which is way different from the Cisco business and carrier markets.
There is no single type of Cisco router. Unlike Linksys where all routers are inexpensive routers focused on the simple home market, the Cisco routers vary by application. In the simpler Internet interfacing routers they offer gateway and access routers, unlike Linksys which offers only gateway routers.
